December Hokkaido Surimi Production Plunges 16% to 2,800 Tons

The National Surimi Manufacturers Association announced that six onshore surimi plants in Hokkaido yielded 2,838 tons of frozen surimi in December 2013, which includes surimi made of materials other than pollack, or down 16 percent compared with the same month a year ago. The aggregate amount from Jan through December added up to 22,315 tons, down 15 percent.


In December as a single month, 2,690 tons of pollack surimi, or down 19 percent, was produced. Atka mackerel surimi was 148 tons, up 68 percentage points. Out of the total yield amount from Jan to December, pollack surimi numbered 20,371 tons, down 9 percent and Atka mackerel surimi was 1,863 tons, down 50 percent.


The surimi inventory as of late December in Hokkaido reported by the association members amounted to 2,466 tons, a decline of 50 percent. Of which, pollack surimi plunged 53 percent to 2,202 tons and Atka mackerel was 264 tons, down 53 percent.
